Dogs are non-judgemental and giving beings who have a unique enthusiasm for life. They have an uncanny way of making us smile and feel better. Our registered therapy dogs regularly visit nursing homes, assisted living facilities, a local hospital and school, inviting all they meet to pet them, forget their troubles and feel loved for a little while. Our therapy work allows us to share our dogs with others in a manner which enriches the lives of all involved.
In order to properly prepare your dog for therapy visits with Clever Canines, you and your dog will need to successfully complete the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen Test and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs Test. (Alliance of Therapy Dogs, formerly Therapy Dogs Incorporated, is a national therapy dog team registry) Both of these tests will document that your dog has basic obedience skills, an appropriate level of responsiveness to you and would behave politely and calmly in a variety of situations.
You may begin therapy visits with us after following these steps. We look forward to having you and your canine friend being a part of our group!
(We simply ask that you purchase an Alliance of Therapy Dogs vest for your dog and a CGC patch to sew onto that vest. *Please note that Alliance of Therapy Dogs does not require your dog to take and pass the AKC CGC test to become a registered therapy dog.
If this sounds like something you would like to add to your spare time activities, we would be glad to help you work toward completion of these tests. Please contact us at julie@clevercaninesinfo.com more information.
Research shows that children who are learning to read feel more relaxed and less self-conscious when reading to dogs. The program aims to improve reading skills, nurture a lifelong love of reading, and help children build bonds with dogs.
Clever Canines Therapy & Obedience Club has teamed with the Colonial Heights Public Library to enhance children's love of reading through the use of certified therapy dogs. Children participating in the program have the opportunity to come to the library to read to dogs (and their owners).
All dog and owner teams have successfully completed the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs Test and regularly visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
You must sign up in advance at the the City of Colonial Heights Public Library's website. Children should be in grades 2, 3, or 4 to participate. You can sign your child up at either library to read to a therapy dog during a 15 minute individual session.
